Bible Quest: A Whole-Congregation Experience

Many congregations using Bible Quest in their education programs also want to connect what is happening educationally to the life of the whole congregation. Here are some ideas to help make Bible Quest a whole-congregation experience.

People in the church

Bookmark passages—biblical stories that all ages have in common—make a great starting point. See the back cover of any leader’s guide for a list of the Bookmark Stories in that quarter and the sessions in which they are used. The Bookmark sessions give an opportunity for all ages to reflect on the same Bible story. Some integration will happen naturally as families or groups within the congregation talk about their experiences. However, you can intentionally focus on Bookmark passages.

Plan a worship service on a Bookmark Story. This worship could occur before or after a Bookmark passage has been used in all age levels and has lots of ideas, as well as liturgies, sermon helps, prayers, and music to aid your worship planning.

Use activities from Bible Quest sessions to link to other areas of congregational life. See Beyond The Learning Area in the leader’s guides. There is a whole page of ideas here to link the material in the sessions to the life of the congregation in worship, pastoral care, outreach, and care in the community. Hold a planning session before the beginning of each quarter and select ideas that you can use in your congregation.

Have all ages study the same story on exactly the same week. You can change the order of the sessions since Bible Quest is very flexible. For example, in the fifth session of the summer quarter for year 1, Multi-Age, K–1, and Adults and all have Psalm 23 as their story of focus. Grades 4–6 and Grades 6–8 start this story one week later, but it’s easy to move session 5 for these age levels (do session 5 after Psalm 23). Push It! (young adult) has Psalm 23 in session 3 of volume 1. BookMarks (older youth) also has a session on this psalm in session 2 of volume 4. For a complete listing of all the biblical stories in Bible Quest, showing where they are used in each age level, review the Session Outlines. [QY: need new sample]

Plan a special congregational event after the sessions on a Bookmark story are completed. Have a "show and tell" time when groups present their creations—art, drama, music, etc.—from their sessions. Do some of the activities that you didn’t get to in the session itself, or ones that are worth doing again, such as a drama, games, or special art activities. Have an all-ages worship on the Bookmark Story. Different groups might lead the prayers, stories, or music that they used in their session or they might share prayers, dramas, or other liturgy they have created.
